Use a compost mixture that is rich in nutrients, is fine-textured and crumbles to the touch. Most garden centers will have bagged compost in stock in ready-to-use form. You will want to spread a 1/4-inch layer of compost over the lawn or about 1 cubic yard/1000 square feet.

Using your shovel spreader or direct from the bag, spread the compost around the lawn surface. When using a spreader, split the lawn in half and work from the inside to the outer edges, then repeat the process for the other half.
