How to Become a Cycling Coach

To become a cycling coach, there are necessary steps you need to take to get certified and keep in good standing. From continuing education credits to passing a background check and yearly exams, being a cycling coach is much more than just telling someone where and how long to ride.

      To be a successful cycling coach, you need to have a love of cycling. And you need riding experience. Get out and ride as much as you can. Participate in races, so that you can be a well-rounded coach.

      Next, decide what kind of cycling coach you want to be. Do you want to coach locally, coach youths, or create online training plans. You may want to pick an area of focus, from road cycling to mountain biking.

      Obtain a Level 3 certification through USA Cycling. You must be a U.S. Citizen and at least 18 years old. You will need to become a member of USA Cycling. Then you will need to pass an online exam. After the exam, you will need to pass a background check.

      You will have to renew your USA Cycling membership and coaching license annually. Continuing education requirements are necessary to renew the license. Every two years, the background check will need to be completed.

      Further your education by becoming a higher level cycling coach, attending workshops and seminars. To become a level two or three coach, you will need to attend a clinic and pass an exam.
