How to Clean Gas Range Burners at Home

Gas range burners are fairly low maintenance items and don't usually require cleaning as often as the range top, but if you cook regularly, the burners could benefit from a monthly cleaning. If you notice that your burners are slow to light, misfire or won't light at all, or the flame varies even without changing the setting, the burner may be clogged. Clogged burners need cleaning immediately for the burner to properly function. Cleaning gas range burners is a simple process that homeowners can manage without the help of a professional. Instructions

    • 1

Make sure the range is completely cool. Remove the grates and burner bowls from the range, and lift the top of the range.

    • 2

Grip the burners at the socket, and pull them out. Do not pull the burners from the burner end, or you may break or damage the burner or the socket.

    • 3

Plug the drain in your kitchen sink, and pour 1/4 cup of dishwashing liquid into the sink. Fill the remainder of the sink with warm water.

    • 4

Place the burners in the sink, and allow them to soak for 10 minutes.

    • 5

Scrub the burners with a medium-bristle brush. Check the head of the burners for blockage, and clear any blockage with a thin metal object such as wire or a paper clip.

    • 6

Rinse the burners thoroughly in hot water, and dry them with a clean cloth.

    • 7

Set your oven to bake at 300 degrees Fahrenheit. Place the burners in the oven, and allow them to bake for 10 to 15 minutes to remove all moisture from the burner. The burner will misfire or function improperly if it has moisture inside.

    • 8

Install the burners, burner bowls and grates back on the range.

Tips & Warnings

  • While the burners are soaking in the sink, clean the area below the burners on the range.

  • Do not use a toothpick to clear holes in the burner head. Wood may break off in the burner, especially when wet.
