It is simpler than astrology, accessible to anyone who can add a few numbers together, and the results are universal -- no time zones or retrograde motion to worry about. The date of birth is used to calculate the life path number.

Write your full birth date down on a piece of paper. Include all four digits of your year of birth, for example 1974 instead of '74. Above the month, day, and year of birth, draw a box; this is where you will store your final digits.

Simplify your birth month into one digit.If you were born between January and September, simply use the number of the month as your digit. January=1, February=2, and so on. For October, November and December, add the two digits together. For example, October is the 10th month, so you add 1+0=1. December is the 12th month, which would be 1+2=3. Write this number in the box above your month of birth.

Simplify your birth day into one digit. Again, for those born between the first and the ninth, the number is your day of birth. For those born between the 10th and the 31st, add the first digit to the second until it turns into one number. If you were born on the 15th, your birthday digit would be 6 (1+5). If you were born on the 29th, you have to add twice. The first time you'll end up with 11 (2+9); the second time you will reach the number 2 (1+1). Write this number in the box above your day of birth.

Simplify your year of birth into a single digit. Write your birth year down and add all four numbers together. If you were born in 1966, add 1+9+6+6, which equals 22. This is not a single digit, so add 2+2, which equals 4. Write this number in the box above your birth year.

Add the three numbers in the boxes together. For one born October 1, 1974, the three boxed numbers would be 1, 1, 3. Added together the numbers add to 5. This is the date of birth (or life-path) number.

Once you become comfortable with adding multiple digits, you can begin to ignore the number 9. Numerologically speaking it's like adding a zero to a number. For example, the year 1999 simplifies to 1 (9+9+9+1=19, 1+9=10, which equals 1).
Some astrologers will not reduce the numbers 11 and 22, which are known as master numbers. For beginners it is best to go ahead and take it to one number, as it is easier to "live up to" the lower vibrations of a number.
You cannot use your date of birth number (aka life path number) as an indication of your full personality. Just as astrologers use the ascendant and the moon sign as secondary indicators, numerologists use the expression number and destiny number, among others.
Keep in mind that you will find many different (though rarely contradictory) interpretations for your life path number. Read about your birth number on more than one website to broaden your understanding of it.
