How to Make a Fresh Flower Cascading Bouquet

A cascading bouquet, sometimes called a waterfall bouquet, is an elegant alternative to a traditional bridal bouquet. This style works particularly well for weddings with a formal style and perfectly complements wedding gowns with trains. Instructions

    • 1

Purchase medium and small fresh flowers and greenery. For a standard-sized cascading bouquet, you can estimate about 12 to 15 medium flowers for the focal point, 15 to 20 smaller accent flowers and 12 to15 stems of greenery. Keep in mind that some flowers aren't as attractive when hanging upside down for this type of bouquet. Choose flowers that look pretty when draped downward.

    • 2

Cut floral foam to fit the bouquet holder using scissors and insert the foam into the holder. Place it in a bowl of water and professional flower food to let the foam soak. Include the flower food to ensure a fresh, professional-looking bouquet.

    • 3

Gather your flowers to experiment with the arrangement of the bouquet. Where will the focal point be, and which flowers will the others group around?

    • 4

Weight down the bottom of the vase with marbles or coins to keep it steady as you work. Place the bouquet holder with saturated foam into the vase.

    • 5

Insert your greenery around the outer edges of the holder to create a frame or border for the bouquet. The length of the greenery around the bottom of the holder will be the completed length of your bouquet, so trim the stems to an appropriate length before continuing.

    • 6

Fill in the foam with more greenery of various lengths creating a dome shape from the middle of the holder. Leave plenty of open space on the foam for the flowers.

    • 7

Add a couple of medium flowers, or your focal point flower, to the center of the holder. Add a few of the same flowers to the outer edges, arranging them so the tips of the flowers reach just barely beyond the greenery.

    • 8

Continue shaping the bouquet by filling in with more flowers. Space them somewhat evenly. The first flowers you added to the middle will face outward gradually tilting outward to the ones around the edges, which will face out to the sides. You want flowers to face out from the bouquet at every angle.

    • 9

Add your smaller accent flowers in the open spaces on the foam to fill in and complement the bouquet but not overpower the design. The bouquet should be filled in but with a slightly loose appearance.

    • 10

Wrap the stems in floral stem tape, cover the tape with ribbon and keep the bouquet watered and refrigerated until the event.

Tips & Warnings

  • It's best not to continually pull the stems out of the foam to rearrange since this can break down the foam. Have your design figured out before you begin to avoid this.
