How to Stop a Hummingbird Feeder From Dripping

Hummingbirds are most drawn to feeders that are tube-shaped and resemble the nectar-bearing flowers they feed on in the wild. The problem with these types of feeders, though, is that they are prone to drip. You may not be able to completely solve the problem of a leaky hummingbird feeder, but with a little effort and diligence, you can reduce dripping.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Fill your hummingbird feeder to the top with cool nectar. Because the feeder operates on a vacuum principal, it is important that the feeder is completely full before the stopper is replaced.

  2. Step 2

    Insert the lid.

  3. Step 3

Turn the feeder upside down as soon as the lid is on. This will prevent any air from entering the area between the stopper and the nectar. A vacuum will be created, keeping the liquid from escaping through the feeder tube until it is drawn out through suction by the hummingbird's beak.

  4. Step 4

Hang the full feeder in a shady area to keep it from getting too warm. The feeder is less likely to drip if the nectar remains cool.

Tips & Warnings
  • Try a top-loading hummingbird feeder if the vacuum-type is too much trouble for you. Hung from a wire suspended from your balcony or a nearby tree. The top-loading plastic feeders can have colorful lids that attract birds. Holding up to 12 ounces of nectar, they can feed several birds at once and may easily be taken apart for cleaning and refilling.
