How to Do Division in Math for Kids

Kids learn division in elementary school. Division is one of the harder math concepts for them to grasp, but once they understand the methods it is easier. Division is a type of math that everyone needs to know how to do. Work a few problems to practice a little and soon you will be doing division in your sleep.

Instructions

    • 1

Learn the five steps of basic division, which are divide, multiply, compare, subtract and bring down. Knowing these five steps and their order is helpful in learning the process of division.

    • 2

Start with a division problem. Let us use 96 divided by 3 for these instructions.

    • 3

Divide the divisor into the dividend. Guess at about how many times the divisor, 3, (the number outside the bracket, the smaller number) goes into the dividend, 96, (the number inside the bracket, the larger number).

    • 4

Multiply the divisor by your guesstimate number. Figure that 3 goes into 9 three times since 3 times 3 equals 9.

    • 5

Compare to see if your multiplied number is smaller or larger than the dividend. See that in this problem, 3 goes into 9 evenly. Multiply by a smaller number if your answer was too large. See if your divisor can go in any more times if your answer seemed too small.

    • 6

Write the number 3 on top of the number 9, outside the bracket.

    • 7

Subtract your multiplied answer, which is 9 minus 9 in this problem, from the dividend once you have found the number that is closest to it without going over the dividend. Notice that the result here is 0, but this is not always the case.

    • 8

Bring down any remaining numbers in the dividend. Write the 6 next to the 0 for this problem. Start the process again with the divisor, 3 for this problem, and the new dividend, which is now 6.

    • 9

Divide the divisor, 3, into the dividend, 6.

    • 10

      Multiply 3 times 2.

    • 11

Compare to find that 3 evenly goes into 6, two times. Write the answer 2 on the top of the bracket, over the 6.

    • 12

Subtract 6 from 6 for an answer of 0. Since there are no more numbers to bring down the problem is complete and your answer to the division problem 96 divided by 3 equals 32.
