How to Be an OSHA Compliance Officer
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is responsible for preventing work-related injuries, illness and deaths. In 2007, OSHA's staff of 2,150 included 1,100 inspectors who conducted 37,700 inspections. If you want to be an OSHA compliance officer, the challenge is finding the job openings, locations, and general application information.

Go to the Department of Labor jobs website. Under the Department of Labor heading, select "Occupational Health and Safety Administration." Under Occupational Series, select "1801-General Inspection, Investigation, Enforcement, and Compliance."

Filter the search according to the locations where you would like to work and your salary requirements. Click "Search for Jobs." Look through the job offerings and click on the one that appeals to you the most.

Understand the requirements. Applicants must be eligible for a certain grade level in order to qualify for certain jobs. For instance, the grade level required to be an OSHA investigator is GS-7 with promotion potential to the grade of GS-12. Other similar positions at OSHA may have different requirements. If you need relocation expenses, check the posting to see if they have been authorized.

Review the job posting, paying careful attention to "Key Requirements." In addition to being a U.S. citizen and over the age of 16, the position requires frequent travel and a driver's licenses. Most applicants also have a degree in engineering or health safety.
