How to Dress for a House Party
House parties are social gatherings, usually casual, held in someone's home. Unlike a dinner party where expectations can be more formal, house parties don't normally require any strict etiquette for dress and fussy invitations are rarely sent out. Even in such a laid-back environment, it is handy to keep in mind a few rules of engagement.

1
Talk to the host of the event prior to planning your outfit. Your host may have individual ideas about what defines appropriate casual wear. There may also be some special considerations, such as optional backyard events or a particular party theme.
-
2
Dress comfortably. It is important to understand there will be a good deal of standing, mingling, drinking and possibly dancing.

3
Avoid wearing shoes you will feel uncomfortable removing. It is common for the host to request that guests remove their shoes upon entering his home, especially when the group is large and there is expensive flooring or carpeting at stake. Similarly, select socks or leggings you are not embarrassed to expose.
-
4
Dress in layers if possible. It is impossible to know how hot or cold a host prefers to keep the thermostat. In large crowded groups in particular, it is difficult to control the temperature. Opt for a fashionable jacket or second layer that is easy to add or remove to your ensemble.

5
Have a sense of humor. House parties are all about relaxing and having a good time. Don't be afraid to incorporate fun colors, graphic prints, or anything that might elicit a laugh.
