Grillers who use gas grills can achieve a more traditional smoky grilled flavor by adding wood chips to their backyard repertoire. Adding wood to the grilling process will enhance the flavor of any food and it's not difficult to use wood chips on a gas grill.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Pour 1/2 cup of wood chips in a small bowl.

  2. Step 2

Cover the wood chips with water and allow them to soak for one hour. Drain off the excess water.

  3. Step 3

Place the wet chips on a 1-foot square piece of aluminum foil.

  4. Step 4

Fold the foil in thirds over the wood chips; turn and fold into thirds again. You now have a square, flat aluminum pouch of wood chips.

  5. Step 5

Prick the foil six times with a knife tip. This will make holes to allow the smoke to escape the pouch.

  6. Step 6

Position the pouch of wood chips beneath the gas grill grate and turn the grill onto the highest setting.

  7. Step 7

Watch for the wood chip pouch to begin smoking. When this happens, lower the heat to your preferred cooking temperature.

  8. Step 8

Arrange your food on the grill grate, following your favorite recipe until fully cooked.

Tips & Warnings
  • Experiment with different types of wood chips to find your favorite flavorings.
  • Closing the grill lid will give the maximum flavor to your food.
  • Never use wood chips from treated lumber to grill food.
