How to Take Apart a Deep Fryer for Cleaning

Things You'll Need
- Dish detergent that cuts through grease
- Warm water
- Oven cleaner
- Scrubber made of plastic for Teflon fryers
- Steel wool pads with soap for metal fryers
- Coffee pot or other container to hold fryer's oil
- Sponge, wash cloths and towels

Unplug fryer and make sure the oil has completely cooled down before taking it apart. Fill the entire sink with hot water, adding just a few drops of dish detergent. Remove the fryer's lid and strainer and place both objects into the water, letting them soak. When the oil is cooled, pour contents into the coffee pot or other container.

Pour warm water with into the fryer up to its regular capacity for grease. Plug in the fryer and heat water until it starts to boil, then add dish detergent. Let the water and soap boil inside the fryer for seven minutes to remove oil stuck on the sides. Unplug the fryer and let the water cool.

Pour the water out and scrub down the insides with the scrubber until sticky contents are loosened. Wipe down the insides with a sponge, wash cloth or towel to wipe away sticky contents. Rinse the fryer with warm water. Spray oven cleaner inside the fryer in any other spots that are still stuck.

Let oven spray sit on the fryer's surface for 10 minutes. Then use the scrubber to scrape away any remaining oil content. Wipe down the insides with a sponge, wash cloth or towel. Rinse the fryer with warm water.

Remove the lid and strainer from sink water and wipe both down using a scrubber. Rinse the lid and strainer with hot water and place them back with the fryer. Empty the sink water. Pour the oil back into fryer. Clean the coffee pot or other container.

Tips & Warnings
You can use baking soda in place of oven cleaner. Just combine a little water with it and it creates a paste that cleans very thoroughly.
Make sure that your fryer is unplugged when handling. Be sure that the fryer's oil has cooled down as hot oil may cause burns.
