Things You'll Need:
- Paint stripper
- Sandpaper
- Paint
- Paint primer
- Paint brush
- Newspaper
-
Step 1
Strip the old paint from your shelves before you apply new paint. A liquid paint thinner works best. Find a well-ventilated work area, lay newspaper down on your work surface, and apply the paint stripper to your shelves with a clean cloth. Apply the stripper several times to remove all of the old paint, making sure you get into any cracks, as well.
-
Step 2
Sand away any chips or uneven spots. You won't need a heavy grit sandpaper to accomplish this. Light sandpaper with a smooth, even rubbing motion over the wood works well. If you find especially scratched or chipped surface area, you might need to apply a little more pressure. Be sure to wipe away any excess wood dust when you're finished.

Step 3
Prime your shelves using water-based white primer. You shouldn't need more than one coat. Allow the primer to dry for at least an hour before you begin painting.
-
Step 4
Use water-based paint on your shelves. You will probably only need one coat. Wait until the paint dries to determine if you need another. If there are thin spots, add another light coat of paint and allow it to dry. You can optionally finish your shelves with a clear lacquer or sealant.
