Instructions

    • 1

Determine the area in which the bricks will be placed and measure the area. On a piece of paper, draw a scale version of the area of the design. For example: If the area is 5 feet by 7 feet, draw a 5-inch-by-7-inch square.

    • 2

Select the size of bricks you plan to use for your brick design. Bricks typically come in standard sizes, which can help simplify the design. In addition to the size, select the color and texture of bricks you will be using. If you are unsure of the exact colors you would like, you can decide this later. Take pictures of all the brick options you are considering.

    • 3

Cut the pictures of the bricks into small version of bricks, matching the scale of the drawing you have created. Begin to lay the small bricks onto the drawing, experimenting with different patterns and color options. Consider placing the bricks in a standardized square for easy placement, or a staggered pattern. Integrating other colors can emphasize areas of the pattern and create interest in the pattern. Continue experimenting with the placement until you have determined a pattern you would like to replicate.

    • 4

Begin to place bricks in the pattern you have created. This process is to make sure you like the pattern in the real material before you create the final piece. If there are any changes you want to make, change the patterning on the piece of paper, as this will be your master pattern for laying out the bricks.

    • 5

Prepare the surface for the brick pattern. Make sure the surface is completely level. Add a layer of sand a few inches deep for the bricks to be placed on.

    • 6

Begin laying the bricks from one corner of the space. Never begin laying bricks in the center of the space. As you lay the bricks on the surface of sand, gently move the brick so it nests into the surface. Make sure each brick is level with the brick placed next to it. Continue this process until you've covered the entire surface and completed the design.

    • 7

Pour sand over the top of the brick surface, sweeping the loose sand into the cracks between the bricks. This will help to secure the pattern and bricks in place.
