Step 1
Paint the cinder block walls. Try painting vertical strips of slightly different hues to make the space seem larger. Before you paint with color, apply a layer of latex block filler, which will fill in the pores of the cinder blocks and provide a smooth surface for the paint.
-
Step 2
Add storage. Many laundry rooms are catchall rooms for other miscellaneous household items. Instead of trying to hang shelves from cinder blocks, bring in a freestanding wire or wood shelving unit. Cover ugly wire with fabric panels or stiff paper cut to fit the shelves, and add crown molding to the front of wood shelves to make them more attractive. Place attractive wicker baskets on the shelves to hold items out of sight.
-
Step 3
Hang lightweight items on the cinder block walls. Use a hot glue gun and hot glue to attach items such as wooden laundry signs, vintage posters, or other lightweight decor. Hot glue will hold the items in place, but it will also easily peel off the wall when you remove the items.

Step 4
Look up. Your ceiling is probably not made of masonry, so it will be easier to hang things from it. Remove ugly canned lights and replace them with pendant lights to give your laundry room better lighting and a bit of style. Hang a potted plant from a ceiling hook if you have a window, or purchase a silk plant. You can also use the ceiling to hang a closet rod on which you can dry clothing.

Step 5
Decorate the window. If your cinder block walls have a window, liven up the space with attractive window treatments. Use a pressure curtain rod inside of the window frame and hang a colorful cafe curtain. Or, install Roman blinds or a beautifully patterned rolling shade.
