The Green Giant is aptly named due to the sheer size of this arborvitae, growing 50 feet tall at maturity. The speed of growth makes it a favorite for use as a privacy hedge or as a wind break. The Green Giant can grow up to 3 feet each summer for the first few years. A public domain plant, the Green Giant can be propagated by anyone. The quickest and easiest way to propagate is to grow the Green Giant from a cutting taken during the latter part of the year or early winter.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Growing medium (1/2 sand and 1/2 peat by volume)
  • Rooting compound (powder or liquid form)
  • Growing pot
  • Bottom heating pad
  1. Step 1

Fill the pot with the growing medium and add water until the soil is damp, but not wet. Pour about 1 tbsp. of rooting compound into a separate container to keep any diseases from contaminating the entire bottle.

  2. Step 2

Cut 6 to 8-inch sections of the Green Giant, making sure the cuttings are semi-hardened and not new soft growth. The new growth will rot instead of taking root.

  3. Step 3

Remove leaves from the bottom 2 inches of the Green Giant cuttings and dip it in the rooting compound. Shake off any excess before planting in the pot.

  4. Step 4

Use a pencil to make a hole in the center of the pot and stick the cutting into the hole about 2 inches deep. Firmly but gently tamp the soil down around the cutting to remove any air gaps that may have formed around the stem of the cutting.

  5. Step 5

Cover the Green Giant cutting with plastic or place the entire pot into a clear plastic bag. Place the growing pot onto the heat mat in a sunny location out of the way of direct sunlight. The ideal temperature for the cuttings to take root is 75 degrees F.

  6. Step 6

Monitor the new cutting for 10 to 12 weeks until new roots start to form by keeping the soil damp and ventilating the pot once a day. Roots may form more quickly but generally the longer in the pot the better for the cutting. Once a healthy root system has been established, maintain a healthy growing environment until spring when the Green Giant cutting can be planted outdoors.
