The summer of 2009 will go down in Internet history as the moment when free movie making online finally came into its own. For years, free online video editors had too few features. Now, many websites let you freely bulk-upload huge video files, cut and splice clips in any sequence, add effects and soundtracks, and share and download your finished movies in all the popular formats. You bring the video clips and the desire to make a movie; the Web will do the rest.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Shoot video footage with a camcorder or webcam. Gather all these movie clips into one folder on your computer hard drive.

  2. Step 2

Choose an online video editor and open a free account. Popular services include JayCut (http://jaycut.com), Pixorial (http://pixorial.com), MotionBox (http://motionbox.com) and OneTrueMedia (http://onetruemedia.com).

  3. Step 3

Sign into your account at your online movie maker of choice and upload your videos, images and music. With a free OneTrueMedia account, you can upload up to 100MB of media per month.

  4. Step 4

Edit your videos using the free tools provided. You can easily cut, splice and rearrange your video clips in any sequence. Experiment with the available transitions to create a smooth flow between clips. Add special effects, a soundtrack and titles for the finishing touches.

  5. Step 5

Save, share and download your finished movie. Use the sharing buttons to automatically post your movie to YouTube, or tweet a link to the video via Twitter. You can save your movie to your hard drive as well.

Tips & Warnings
  • Free upload limits vary by service. Some online movie makers allow you to upload unlimited video. Most are limited by total storage, individual file size, or uploads during a given time frame.
  • Back up your raw movie footage before working with your videos.
