How to Train German Shorthaired Pointers

The German shorthaired pointer is an active, happy dog. They are incredibly intelligent, but they are independent thinkers. To the outside observer who is not prepared for their training temperament, they can appear to be impossible to train. This is not true. They just make up their own rules while you are training them so you need to be persistent and prepared for what is in store. If you are willing to take the time to know your dog and understand how he thinks, training a German shorthaired pointer will be easy to do.

Instructions

  1. General Attitude

    • 1

Begin your training when your pointer is still a puppy, since older pointers tend to be more resistant to training. Start around eight to ten weeks.

    • 2

Read about the breed to understand their personality and predilections.

    • 3

Allow your pointer to think she is the one calling the shots. Avoid making her feel like she is being told what to do, but rather that you are making suggestions so she thinks she came up with the idea.

    • 4

Do not try to force your pointer to do what you are telling him. Stop, take a break and try again instead.

    • 5

Be willing to change your game plan mid-stream if your pointer is not responding.

    • 6

Make the training enjoyable for both you and your pointer. Have fun.

    • 7

Focus on one command at a time. Do not move on to a new command until the first one is mastered.

    • 8

Keep training sessions short in the beginning and work up to longer periods. Train daily to ensure consistency.

    Sit

    • 9

      Say sit.

    • 10

Hold a treat above his head until he has to look above and behind him to see it.

    • 11

Keep your hand on his rump while you hold the treat, and gently press down.

    • 12

Praise him and give the treat once he sits.

    • 13

Repeat until he understands the command.

    Down

    • 14

Have your pointer sit. Say down.

    • 15

Place a treat under her nose and pull your hand straight to the grown and then out in front of her, in a L shape.

    • 16

Continue this procedure, saying down, until she lies down.

    • 17

Repeat until she understands the command.

    Heel

    • 18

Place a leash on your pointer.

    • 19

Ensure you have a distance to walk unobstructed. Walk until he walks in front of you.

    • 20

      Change directions.

    • 21

Say heel once he catches up with you again.

    • 22

Continue to change directions and say heel until he understands the command.

Tips & Warnings

  • With the down command, your pointer will lower her head to get the treat and then crawl forward with her front feet to get the treat.

  • If you prefer not to use edible treats, you can use a favorite toy as well. Be sure to give your pointer lots of praise and affection and try to avoid getting frustrated if he doesn't seem to be getting it as quickly as you would like.
