How to Prune a Crimson Barberry

Barberry plants are hardy little shrubs that come in a variety of colors. Birds will often nest in these plants for protection. They also enjoy full sunlight, which makes them a good alternative to shade loving shrubs. Pruning these plants can be somewhat unpleasant because of their sharp thorns, so ensure that you are protected by wearing gloves and a long-sleeve shirt. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Decide what kind of pruning your shrub needs. There are three kinds: rejuvenation to remove large portions of the plant to give the remainder room to grow, thinning to remove key branches or pieces that are hindering the overall shape of the plant, and hedging to give a specific and attractive shape to the plant.

    • 2

Remove any branches that are dying or turning brown close to the stem of the shrub. Examine the remaining plant to determine which branches need to be clipped for the type of pruning you are doing.

    • 3

Trim the selected pieces off. Remember to keep a barberry shrub wide at the base and narrow it slightly towards the top. This is the best shape to help them grow and stay healthy.

    • 4

Pick up all the pieces you have trimmed off and throw them out in yard bags. This particular shrub tends to spread itself through any clippings that you leave behind.
