How to Identify Black Swarming Ants

Ants will swarm from their nests when reproducing, as will termites. A swarm of ants is bad enough, indicating the presence of a nest in your home, and the soon-to-come addition of a new nest. A swarm of termites, however, means a nest of pests eating away at the wooden beams in your house. The question then is, which one is already in your home? Follow a few simple steps to pinpoint which pest is plaguing your place! Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Using the glass, capture a few specimens and observe their anatomy. Check for the segmented body of an ant, as opposed to the single, unbroken body of a termite.

    • 2

Check the wingspans. If the pests have two pairs of wings of equal length, then they are termites. If, on the other hand, they have two pairs of unequal length, then you are dealing with a swarm of ants.

    • 3

Check the color of the insects. Ants come in a variety of colors (red, black, yellow), whereas termites are always shiny and black.

    • 4

Check the antennae of the insects. Ant antennae are curved, with a little knob at the end. Termite antennae are smooth to the end.

    • 5

Consider the location of the swarm. Ants will be found near your food, such as in a kitchen or in a pantry, whereas termites will be located near sources of wood, such as a garage or near wooden furniture.
