Instructions

  1. The Process

    • 1

Put on a pair of plastic gloves and put the dead mouse in a small Ziploc bag. Close the Ziploc bag. Drop it in the garbage outside. You have to remove the mouse first before you can tackle the smell it leaves behind.

    • 2

Use the normal cleaning solutions that you would use to clean the home and do a quick cleaning of your home. This won't get rid of the smell entirely, but you will be cleaning the areas that the mouse may have been.

    • 3

Open all the windows in the home to air the house out depending on what time of the year it is. If it is winter, this may be more difficult to keep the windows open for long.

    • 4

Take the onion into the kitchen, use a knife to slice it in half on a small plate. Put a half of the onion in the room where you found the mouse and another one in another room where you think the mouse may have been. Leave the onion halves in the rooms overnight. The onion will absorb the smell.

    • 5

Put half a cup of vinegar in a small bowl and leave this in the rooms overnight as well. The vinegar will also absorb the smell.

    • 6

Spray the room or rooms with an odor eliminator. Do this every few hours for an entire day or couple of days until the smell is all gone.

Tips & Warnings

  • Clean the carpet if the mouse died on the carpet. You may need a professional carpet cleaner to do this.

  • Air fresheners will only compound the problem by combining with the mouse smell and making it worse. If you burn candles, it won't get rid of the mouse odor.
