How to Treat Severe Pain From Kidney Stones

Kidney stones are referred to as calculi in the medical community. They are actually mineral deposits that harden over time in to stones. Kidney stones cause extreme pain when the body tries to pass them. Many times, medical intervention is needed to get rid of them. In the meantime, however, you will want to do something about the pain.

Things You'll Need:

  • Anti-inflammatory pain relievers
  • IV medications
  1. Step 1

    Take an over-the-counter anti-inflammatory pain reliever. Ibuprofen (Advil and Motrin) is the most common. The recommended dose for an adult is one tablet every six hours. Naproxen (Aleve) is another choice. The adult dosage for Aleve is one capsule every eight hours.

  2. Step 2

    Ask your doctor for a stronger pain reliever that you can take at home. The doctor will be able to prescribe you something like Tylenol No. 3 (Tylenol with codeine). This will give you more relief than just taking an over-the-counter medication.

  3. Step 3

    Visit the emergency room to get some intravenous medications. These medications will work within seconds of being administered. They also much stronger than any pain reliever you can take at home.

Tips & Warnings
  • It is important that individuals with kidney stones continue to drink lots of water. This will help the stone pass much faster.
  • Some herbs such as beriberi are also said to relieve pain from all kinds of conditions including kidney stones.
  • If you believe the pain you are experiencing is from kidney stones, get it confirmed by a doctor. This pain may actually be something more serious.
