Fix Sediment Build Up in your Water Heater
-
4
Set your water heater to the "Pilot" setting if it is gas, or flip the circuit breaker assigned to it off if it is electric. You do not want the burners lighting up or the elements turning on during the flush.
-
5
Thread the garden hose on to the drain at the bottom of the water heater, and let the other end of the hose go down a drain or outside.
-
6
Turn off the valve that allows cold water to enter at the top of the water heater, and open the temperature and pressure relief valve lever near it.
-
7
Open the drain valve at the bottom of the water heater attached to the hose. When the hose runs clear, close the drain valve and remove the garden hose from it. Push the pressure relief valve lever down again, and open the cold water inlet.
-
8
Run a hot water faucet in the house until there are no more air bubbles, and set the temperature for the hot water heater again on a gas system or flip the circuit breaker back on for an electric one.
