How to Identify Side Effects of Endovenous Laser Treatment (EVLT)
EVLT is endovenous laser treatment for varicose veins. Laser energy is delivered via a laser fiber inside the vein. The laser shrinks the vein walls closed, and the varicosities disappear. There are many veins in the leg, so the loss of the veins does not harm circulation. In fact, the body reacts by diverting blood to normal veins, thereby increasing circulation. Although relatively low risk, the procedure may have side effects.

1
Look out for burns. The use of laser energy may cause burns on the skin above the vein or nearby nerves and tissue. Burns normally heal; however, nerve damage may result in long-term numbness.
-
2
Be on guard for blood clots. EVT has a small risk of blood clots. There is a slight risk of developing a blood clot in the femoral vein. This risk is avoided by keeping patients active and by the use of support hose.

Take note of any inflammation is a common side effect after EVT therapy. The leg may feel sore and be swollen for a period of time after laser treatment.
-
4
Watch for any spider veins that may develop. After EVT, it is possible that the patient may develop spider veins. If these are a concern to the patient, treatment is then required to eliminate the appearance of the spider veins.

5
Expect that the patient will likely experience a tightness of the leg in the first few weeks after EVT treatment. Patients may experience a feeling of tugging or tightness in the legs. This feels like a pulling sensation when walking. This side effect normally disappears.
