How to Utilize Proper Etiquette in Your Writing Community

There are myriad writing communities on the Internet. If you write for one of the top communities on the Web there is a way to exercise proper etiquette that makes you an asset, rather than a hindrance to your community. This article outlines the steps that will not only benefit you as a member of your community but will enhance the online writing association as a whole.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

It is not necessary to send emails, internal emails asking others to read and rate your articles. This is not advised because it amounts to spamming. If you have 100 or more friends in your community, or thousands of friends, and you have a third of your associates sending you emails asking you to read and rate their articles, you can clearly see how that becomes spamming.

There are forums that you can participate in and groups you can join that serves the purpose of getting your articles viewed and rated. Participate in the forums and join a couple of internal groups.

  2. Step 2

If someone comments on one of your articles, common courtesy suggest that you should immediately comment on one of their articles. Don't wait until you're online again because you probably won't do it. I find it odd, and really selfish when you're asked to rate someone's article, you do so, and that person doesn't have the decency to comment on yours. That is narcissism in its purest form.

  3. Step 3

Create a Yahoo Group, MSN Live, or utilize Facebook or Twitter to get your Social Networking associates to read your articles. Also submit your articles to the various Social Bookmarking sites such as Diggs, Reddit, Mixx, Propeller, Slashdot, and many others.

This is the proper way to promote your articles because no matter how "great" or "helpful" you think your article may be, when you are emailing 5 or more people at one time, about your article, it's spamming. No matter how you slice it!

on 11/12/2009 Great article on How to Utilize Proper Etiquette in Your Writing Community. Very well put. It does get annoying for people to e-mail you along with 40 other names to please read their article.... then when you do, they don't have the decency to take a look at one of yours in return. Also, it is rude in my opinion for someone to say they gave you a rating and you know they didn't. There are quite a few that make a habit of this. Anyway, good article with excellent advice. Thanks for posting, 5*
