Step 1
Consider places in the New York City area that are outside the 5 boroughs. The New York City area is well served by the extensive commuter rail system. As long as a destination is on one of these train routes, it can be counted among the New York City area destinations. Try going to Beacon to see the Dia: Beacon museum, Long Island to take a tour of wine country, or the Maritime Aquarium in Norwalk. All of these New York City area destinations make great day trips and can be reached from the city using only public transportation.

Step 2
Prearrange the transportation for your New York City area day trip. The New York City area has great public transportation, but some trips will require that you use several different modes of transportation to get to your destination. Use your computer the day before to decide on the route you will take and the modes of transportation you will need to get you to where ever you decide to go. This will smooth out your trip, and help you figure out how much money you can expect to spend on transportation.
-
Step 3
Bring a book, portable video game, or other entertainment to pass the time while traveling. Chances are that you will be taking at least one form of public transportation on your New York City area day trip. This means that you will probably have a lot of down time while you are waiting on the train, bus, or subway. Make sure that you have some form of entertainment with you to help pass the time.
