Step 1
Consider whether you want to be in the NYC environment all of the time. If so, any of the three New York universities would be fine, but if you want to get away from the cramped spaces of Manhattan for periods of time, Fordham has a huge gated campus in the Bronx with gigantic fields, plenty of open space, and a laid back atmosphere.

Step 2
Decide whether you would like to have a traditional campus for your college experience. If so, Columbia and Fordham both offer big, traditional college campuses. NYU, on the other hand is different in its layout. More than either of the two other New York universities it is integrated into the city. There are plenty of parks around, but no campus and all of the NYU buildings are on regular city blocks.

Step 3
Ask yourself whether or not you are looking for a deeper program of university-sponsored intellectual and cultural events, if so, then Columbia might be the best of the New York universities for you. Their deep pockets and large endowment allow them to hold tons of great lectures and concerts, many of which are free for the university community.
