How to Qualify for Government Grants

A grant is known as an award of economic aid or for financial assistance from a granter to the grantee. These are not loans, and do not need to be repaid. The government grant money is used for the purposes that the granter specifies. Maybe you need money to pay for college or to start/expand a business. Maybe you are working on medical research, technological development, etc. Whatever the case, learn how you can see if you qualify for government grants.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

First, one must get to know the different types of government grants available. Formula grants are applied to certain factors impacting population of an area, number of people unemployed, density of housing in an area, etc. A project grant is used for research projects by scientists. Categorical grants are for specific categories such as improving schools, education, or road construction, etc. Block grants are used for combining categorical grants into a single program. Lastly, Earmark grants are grants created for different reasons and programs.

  2. Step 2

In order to qualify for a grant, one must be older than 18 years of age. You also need to fill out an application and submit a grant proposal, explaining the reasons for applying for a grant. One of the best websites that offer government grants is GRANTS.GOV. Different grants require different requirements, so make sure to meet all of them.

  3. Step 3

By creating a budget application, you can show how you plan to use the money so that the granter knows that the money is going to good hands. You should also include any history of previous grants received and how you have made use of them.

  4. Step 4

A good tip would be to hire a professional grant writer to create your grant proposal, or to give you tips on how to write grant proposals. Other sites include fafsa.ed.gov and usa.gov. If you are a college student, you are aware of FAFSA, who provide free grants to college students to help fund for college expenses. Even if your parents' income is higher, you should still apply.

  5. Step 5

Remember, the length of the applications for government grant proposals will vary. Since types of grants are very broad and vary widely, it is a good idea to apply for other grants on the basis of your social economic status.
