Step 1
Consult your veterinarian about the proper amount to feed your pet. Keep in mind that factors such as weight, breed, age, and activity can influence the amount your pet is fed. Do NOT simply go by weight, which is used on most pet food bags.
-
Step 2
Have a regular feeding schedule. If you pet is on a diet, split their daily portion in 3 or 4 smaller feedings.
-
Step 3
Look for foods that are high in fiber and low in fat content.
-
Step 4
Be mindful of feeding treats. Limit the number of treats fed per day and look for healthier treats that are made of natural sources or are low in calories. Use treats as a reward for good behavior rather than a way to make you feel better.
-
Step 5
Increase your pet's physical activity. Get into a routine daily by taking your pet for a walk or arrange a play time.
