This french toast is extra toasty and tasty with a quick coating of oats (such as Quaker or store-brand). The oats add a little extra nutrition while still having a light version of this favorite breakfast or brunch treat.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 6 slices bread
  • 2 eggs
  • one cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 tsp. sugar
  • 1/4 cup oats
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional)
  • salt to taste
  • bowl for mixing
  • plate for spreading oats
  • grill or skillet
  • butter or margarine (if desired)
  • syrup
  1. Step 1

In bowl, beat or whisk together egg, milk, salt, spices and vanilla until smooth.

  2. Step 2

Heat a large, lightly oiled griddle of skillet over medium-high flame.

  3. Step 3

Spread oats on a plate so that you can coat the slices of toast easily.

  4. Step 4

Dunk each slice of bread in egg mixture, quickly, but covering both sides.

  5. Step 5

Lay each damp slice of bread on plate of oats to coat moderately.

  6. Step 6

Place in oiled grill or skillet, and cook on both sides until golden, using spatula or fork to flip.

  7. Step 7

Serve hot with butter or margarine (if desired) and syrup.

  8. Step 8

Place slices of bread in a staggered, or overlapping design, on a plate for serving.

  9. Step 9

Keep french toast in warm oven if there is a delay in serving. Warming a container of syrup also ensures that your french toast will be warm for eating.

Tips & Warnings
  • Try fresh, canned, or frozen (thawed and warmed) fruit in addition to syrup or instead of syrup. Your creative choices of fruit can make this dish look extra special and inviting.
  • OR have a side dish of fruit.
