Most accidents occur during nighttime hours. Approximately 2,300 pedestrians are killed annually in the U.S. due to a driver's lack of visibility. Maintaining your car's headlights improves visibility and makes driving at nighttime safer. There are a few steps that can be taken to maintain your car's headlights.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Keep your headlights clean. Dust and dirt particles on the glass can cause a glare. Clean headlights help you see better and prevent glare. Scrub the glass of your headlights when you wash your car and when you wash your windshield at the gas station.

  2. Step 2

Be sure your headlights are aimed properly. Driving on rough surfaces often knock headlights out of position. When you get your oil changed or are at the repair shop have the service person check them and adjust them if necessary.

  3. Step 3

Keep your headlights free of condensation, road chips and surface scratches. These things can cause a glare.

  4. Step 4

Proactively change headlight light bulbs. Do not wait for bulbs to burn out. Also, keep a spare bulb in your car.

  5. Step 5

Use high performance light bulbs. Whiter, brighter halogen bulbs improve visibility.
