A gift of etched glass is a great way to memorialize a special occasion or event. But, if you've ever visited the mall to purchase one, you no doubt were surprised by the cost. But what if you could learn to etch glass yourself?

Etched glass never goes out of style and with the right equipment and practice, you can start creating your own masterpieces.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Rotary Tool
  • Detailer’s grip
  • Diamond point accessories (3/32”)
  • Tungsten carbide cutters
  • Silicon carbide stones
  • Marker
  • Goggles or other eye protection
  • Face-mask cloth respirator
  1. Step 1

Select an image or pattern to trace by looking at it through the glass or, draw your pattern directly onto the glass with a marker.

  2. Step 2

With the rotary tool unplugged, connect the Detailer’s Grip attachment. Set your rotary tool to a speed between 15,000 and 25,000 rpm and plug the tool in.

  3. Step 3

Turn the rotary tool on and press down lightly to begin etching the pattern in the glass.

  4. Step 4

The type of etching you are trying to accomplish determines what type of cutter you will using. For instance, diamond points provide a very fine line while Tungsten carbide cutters provide a sharper, more aggressive line. Silicon carbide stones provide a fuller but softer line, and they are great for smoothing rough edges. In combination, the different bits can be used to create the right look for any piece.

  5. Step 5

After the entire pattern has been etched, wipe the area clean with a cloth and admire your creativity.
