Anybody can remove a dishwasher. Whether replacing the old model for a sleek new one or to repair the existing model, homeowners will find this a painless procedure. With a few basic hand tools, mild strength and a willingness to get down on your hands and knees, it is possible to remove your dishwasher in a short amount of time.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 6-inch adjustable wrench
  • Phillips head screwdriver
  • Flat tip screwdriver
  • Linemen's pliers
  1. Step 1

Unscrew the access panels. Two access panels are located at the bottom of the dishwasher. The larger panel sits on top and is flush with the door. The smaller panel sits along the floor and is recessed. Unscrew the panels using the phillips head screwdriver.

  2. Step 2

Turn off the electricity supply for the dishwasher. Remove the cover from the electrical connection box with the phillips head screwdriver. Pull the wires out from the box and unscrew the wire nuts. Remove the wires from the back of the box afterward. If there is an electrical clamp, then you will need to unscrew it first.

  3. Step 3

Disconnect the water supply below the kitchen sink. Search for a separate valve that leads solely to the dishwasher. Turn it to the right to shut it off.

  4. Step 4

Disconnect the drain line. The drain line is also found under the sink. Find the corrugated line where it attaches directly to the kitchen sink drain. Use the flat tip screwdriver to turn off the clamp that holds it in position.

  5. Step 5

Remove the water line from the solenoid valve. This can be found behind the access panel. The water line is a copper tube. Use the 6-inch adjustable wrench to unscrew the nut that connects the tube to the valve by turning counterclockwise.

  6. Step 6

Lower the adjustable feet if necessary so the dishwasher can easily slide out. Depending on the model, the feet can be lowered with linemen's pliers or a screwdriver.

  7. Step 7

Open the dishwasher door and remove the tabs. At the top front of the dishwasher, there will be two tabs that are used to mount the underside compartment of the countertop with screws. Remove the screws with the screwdriver. Afterward, bend the tabs down toward the dishwasher so they don't obstruct the dishwasher as you slide it out.

  8. Step 8

Close the dishwasher door and lock it in position. Grab the dishwasher at the two top corners and tip it forward or toward your body. With one hand remaining on the top, reach your other hand to the bottom front of the dishwasher, and slowly pull the dishwasher out from under the countertop. Grab the drain hose off the ground and set the open end on top of the dishwasher as it is being removed to avoid any water spills on the ground.

Tips & Warnings
  • Have a friend help with removing the dishwasher to avoid a potential back injury.
  • Remember that electricity and water don't mix. Shut the power off and completely disable it to avoid injury.
