How to Import Data From an Mdf File

Occasionally, you may find a file with the .MDF extension when downloading a backed up CD or DVD. The .MDF extension is used by files containing a bit-perfect copy of an original disc. Use Alcohol 120% to create a virtual drive on the computer, mount the MDF file, and extract the data from it.

Instructions

    • 1

Download Alcohol 120%. Alcohol 120% costs nothing to download and use, but the creator asks that users purchase the program if they wish to use it beyond the initial trial. Install and run the program. Restart the computer when prompted.

    • 2

Double click the "My Computer" icon. You should see a new DVD drive. This is the virtual drive, installed by Alcohol 120%.

    • 3

Right click on the MDF file, and click "Rename." Change the last three letters of the file from MDF to MDS.

    • 4

Open Alcohol 120%, and drag the MDS file to the window. Right click the file in the Alcohol 120% window, and click "Mount on Device."

    • 5

Create a new folder on the desktop. Name it "MDF Backup."

    • 6

Double click the "My Computer" icon. Right click on the virtual DVD drive, and click "Explore."

    • 7

Click one of the files shown in the window, then hit the "Ctrl" and "A" keys on the keyboard simultaneously. All of the files on the disc image will be highlighted.

    • 8

Hit the "Ctrl" and "C" keys simultaneously to copy all of the files on the disc image.

    • 9

Open the folder that you created on your desktop. Click inside it, and hit the "Ctrl" and "V" keys simultaneously. All of the files from the disc image will be copied from the image and imported to your hard drive.
