How to Keep a Pipe Wrench From Slipping

A pipe wrench is an open-end adjustable tool for gripping and turning objects, typically threaded bolts and tubes, such as plumbing pipes, for which the pipe wrench was named. Also known as a monkey wrench, the pipe wrench has serrated teeth set into the upper and lower jaws for better gripping power. Sometimes the teeth are not enough to get a good grip on the pipe, so extra steps are necessary to prevent the tool from slipping.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

• Heavy duct tape
• Scissors
• Pipe wrench

1. Cut a length of duct tape with the scissors.

2. Wrap the pipe nut with several layers of duct tape.

3. Place the jaws of the pipe wrench over the duct tape around the pipe.

4. Tighten the wrench by turning the adjustment wheel below the jaws. Tighten until the serrated teeth in the jaws bite into the duct tape.

5. Pull the wrench handle counter-clockwise around the pipe to loosen the nut. The duct tape offers extra traction.

6. Cut off the duct tape from the nut with a scissors when finished.

Tips & Warnings

• Wear work gloves when working under a sink or in confined spaces with a pipe wrench. If the wrench slips off, you could badly bruise or cut your hands.
