When the holiday season approaches, one focus is the festive lights and decorations that the season brings to every home in the neighborhood. Take the time to plan and buy supplies for the perfect light display to shock the socks off the neighborhood. This will also allow you to be ready for that perfect day when it is not too cold or too hot and you can install the lights hassle-free. The following instructions are for installing icicle lights on a single-story home.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 1 large package of cup hooks
  • 1 large package of plastic gutter clips
  • 1-2 ground fault interrupters
  • 1-2 heavy-duty outside extension cords
  1. Step 1

Make a basic sketch or drawing of the perimeter of the house and the layout or design of the lighting scheme you want to install. Consider whether the lighting display will be running around the gutter system or soffit area and whether it will include the entire perimeter of the house and garage or just the house. Once you have completed your design plan, you can determine how many linear feet of lighting strings you will need to purchase.

  2. Step 2

Mark your sketch or drawing with the lengths and number of strings required so you'll know how many to purchase. Go to your local department store or general-merchandise store and purchase your supplies for the project.

  3. Step 3

Using an 8-foot step ladder and with the aid of your assistant or helpers, you are ready to start the installation process. Have one of your helpers grip the ladder to keep it from tipping. Have the second helper hand you the materials. Start by installing the gutter clips at two-foot intervals. Next have the helper start the light string with the ground fault interrupter and extension cord if needed to gain access to the power supply. You can probably work a four-foot area safely from the ladder before you will have to move the ladder.

  4. Step 4

Continue installing gutter clips and stringing lights until the entire design area has been covered with the icicle light strings. (Note: In areas where you cross a soffit or have a transition point, the use of cup hooks may be required or may make for easier installation.)

  5. Step 5

When all the icicles light strings have been secured with either the gutter clips or cup hooks, you are ready for the light show. Plug the ground fault interrupter into the power source and let the light festival begin. Congratulations on your completed project, and have a safe and wonderful holiday season.

Tips & Warnings
  • When a house is equipped with gutters, a good mounting method for icicle lights is the plastic gutter clips. Once the gutter clips are installed on the gutter and the light string is connected to the clips, you can leave them mounted to the string. This system can be used year after year until you decide to change lighting plans. It is important, though, to mark the strings with the location of the gutter and to put them on a spool (extension cord spools work well for this purpose) so they don't tangle and will be easy to install next year.
