How to Design a Good Product Label

A product label provides the ingredients and nutritional information of a product, but its key function is to be visually appealing and informative enough to draw attention to the item itself and entice consumers into making a purchase. Designing an effective product label is not difficult. The key is knowing your product and how to present it in an attractive package.

Instructions

Choose a good desktop publishing program. Microsoft Publisher is a popular option for PC users. You can also use PagePlus, which is comparable to Publisher and completely free. For Mac users, Scribus is a free open source program similar to PagePlus.

Launch the publishing software and begin creating your label design by either selecting a template or by opening a new page, which you'll customize by specifying your label dimensions and layout. Since your labels may vary widely in size and shape, it's generally best to start from scratch.

Determine the dimensions you'll need by using a sheet of paper to create a quick mock-up label and fitting it to your product. These are the dimensions you want to enter into your page setup.

Feature the name of your product prominently on your label. To do this in PagePlus, select the "Artistic Text Tool" on the toolbar running along the left side of your workspace. Draw a text box on your document and enter the name of your product. Use the toolbar's drop-down "Font" selector to choose your preferred font. (Or, if you already have a font designed in another program and saved it on your desktop, go to the "Insert" menu, select "Picture," find the file on your computer and insert.) To set the color of your font, go to the "Format" menu, choose "Character" and fill out the dialogue box.

Consider adding an image that can be trademarked and will identify your product at a glance. Go to the "Insert" menu and select "Picture" to bring the image into your document. Then, select "Send to Back" under the "Arrange" menu to ensure that your image stays in the background, behind the name of your product. The image should be dynamic and memorable but it should not overpower the product name. The two should work together as a well-balanced presentation.

    • 5

Use the "Text" tool to insert the product's nutrition information, ingredients and/or instructions. The font size for this text should be small and placed along the left or right side of your label or across the bottom. A vital but secondary aspect, this information can be read later, after the initial overall design of the product label has attracted the curious consumer.

Tips & Warnings

  • Keep your overall product label design sharp and focused, avoiding the temptation to add unnecessary elements, because if a design is too busy, it will create a cluttered appearance.
