How to Remove a Kwikset UltraMax Deadbolt

Most homeowners know that it is a good idea to replace or re-key the locks when they purchase a new home. Removing the old hardware is fairly easy, but may be a little tricky if you have a Kwikset UltraMax deadbolt. The deadbolt has a rose plate that can hide the mounting screws. Fortunately, you'll find that removing the rose plate is straightforward if you know how to get to it. If you have a Phillips-head screwdriver and a paperclip or awl, you'll be able to remove your deadbolt in just a few minutes. Does this Spark an idea?

      Position yourself in front of the inside half of the deadbolt. Look at the shaft that connects the thumb-turn latch to the inside chassis and locate the pin that holds it on the shaft.

      Use a paperclip or an awl to pop the pin out of the shaft and remove the thumb-turn latch. Remove the rose plate that lies beneath the latch by prying up gently with a flat-blade screwdriver.

      Use your Phillips-head screwdriver to remove the two mounting screws. These screws connect the two chassis halves. Grasp the inside chassis with one hand and the outside chassis with your other hand. Pull the two halves apart to separate.

      Open the door so that you can see the edge. Remove the two Phillips-head screws that hold the latch assembly in place. Slide the latch out of the edge of the door.

      Place all screws and deadbolt components in a container so that you can keep track of them.
