1
Locate a container or bag that will hold the first aid kit contents. The container can be custom designed for first aid kits, like the kind sold at stores, or you can simply use an shoe box or backpack.
-
2
Place a list of your current medications along with an emergency supply of each in the first aid kit. Speak to your doctor about receiving a prescription to keep in your first aid kit. This should ideally be enough to last at least seven days according to the American Red Cross. Keep an eye on expiration dates on all medication. Remember to include aspirin as well.

3
Place a list of all emergency contacts in the first aid kit. This will ensure that you don't have to locate information in an emergency. This can save valuable time when it comes to first aid and emergency situations. The contacts should include 911, physicians and family members to contact in case of an emergency.
-
4
Include common first aid items such as bandages, compresses, tape, non-latex gloves and antibiotic ointment. You should also include sterile gauze pads of various sizes for different size wounds.
-
5
Keep scissors and tweezers in the first aid kit. The scissors will help to cut the tape and gauze and the tweezers can be used to remove objects from the skin, such as stingers and glass.
-
6
Purchase a first aid handbook or guide. Place this inside the first aid kit for a ready and quick reference. You can also speak to your local Red Cross chapter to get trained in basic first aid and CPR. Being properly prepared will help a cool head prevail in a first aid or emergency situation.
