Creating a playroom for the children in your home can provide them with an exciting and creative space in which to play and entertain themselves. Designating a room for play can also help keep toys and crafts contained and avoid having them spread all over the house. Know what you need in a playroom, understand what your child wants and let your imagination run wild.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Paper
  • Pencil
  • Paint
  • Paint brushes or rollers
  • Furniture
  • Decorative items
  • Storage pieces
  1. Step 1

Choose which room in your home will become the playroom. Consider factors such as accessibility and noise. Select a room central enough to be easily monitored by adults but in a location that allows the child to feel the room belongs to him.

  2. Step 2

Sketch your ideas for playroom themes and layouts with a pencil and paper. If you want a themed room reflecting the child's interests, think about how that would be incorporated into furnishings and decor. Leave plenty of open floor space for children to play.

  3. Step 3

Choose a paint color or colors, based either on a chosen theme or the personal preferences of you and your child. Paint the room your chosen colors. Vibrant, bright colors stimulate a playful atmosphere.

  4. Step 4

Select and place appropriate furniture based on your design layout, considering functionality. Include a table for crafts and games and an entertainment center and sofa if you include a television. Home improvement website thisoldhouse.com suggests that playrooms don't need to be filled with plastic furniture. Try making your own kid-size furniture by cutting a few inches off the legs of adult-size tables and chairs.

  5. Step 5

Pick organizational pieces with your child's toys and other belongings in mind. Because the playroom is likely to contain a multitude of toys and supplies, organization is key. Plastic bins or drawer units are durable and easy to label, and shelving units are a convenient place to store items accessed by the child most often.

  6. Step 6

Choose decorative pieces for the room to make it comfortable and inviting. If you are working with a theme, tailor your choices around that theme. Hang posters the child likes, choose curtains that have a youthful look and feel or paint murals and decorations directly onto the walls.

  7. Step 7

Move your child's toys and craft supplies into the new playroom, and help them explore.

Tips & Warnings
  • Involve your child in the design process to help him feel connected to the room and ensure that the choices made are to his liking.
