-
-
3
Spread a fine layer of baking soda across the cooktop surface.
-
4
Wet the Brillo pad under the sink faucet, and scrub the cooktop surface with the pad using the baking soda as an abrasive to remove stubborn stains and dirt.
-
5
Scrub the entire cook top surface with the Brillo pad, making sure to scrub harder and longer around heavily stained areas around the gas burners.
-
6
Get the dishwashing sponge wet with water, and wipe off any baking soda and dirt that the Brillo pad loosened on the entire cooktop surface.
-
7
Remove the stovetop grates over the gas burners, spray them with oven cleaner and let them sit for 20 minutes.
-
8
Wash off the oven cleaner in the sink, and use the Brillo pad to scrub down the loosened stains and dirt off the grates.
-
9
Squeeze the water out of the sponge, and pour ammonia on it so the sponge absorbs the liquid.
-
10
With the sponge full of ammonia, wipe any remaining stains and baked-on food with the sponge, getting the stains and baked-on food wet.
-
11
Allow the ammonia to sit on the stains and baked-on food for 5 minutes.
-
12
After 5 minutes, scrape the stains and baked-on food with a razor blade. The razor blade should chisel off the stains and baked-on food. To use a razor blade as a scraper, hold the back of the razor and place the sharp edge of the razor blade on your cooktop surface at a 20-degree angle to the surface. Push the razor blade against the baked-on food and stains to scrape the particles off the cook top.
-
13
Wash the ammonia out of the sponge, and clean the cooktop surface using the dish soap, warm water and sponge as you did in steps 1 and 2.
-

Tips & Warnings
Do not get the oven cleaner on your enamel or glass cooktop as it will peel the enamel paint off or fog up your glass top, ruining the look of your cooktop forever. You may want to spray your cooking grates outside on your driveway, so you don't damage any surfaces in your kitchen. The cooking grates will not be damaged by the oven cleaner because your grates are not painted but are raw metal.
