How to Use a KVM Switch for Satellite TV

Using a KVM switch to switch between your computer's interface and satellite TV broadcasts is a great way to save space in a media center. Using the same display for multiple inputs will also lighten the load on your wallet. The appropriate monitor, cabling and a few minutes of setup time are the only things that stand between you and a more streamlined media center.

Instructions

    • 1

Plug the DVI (Digital Visual Interface) cable into the DVI-out connector on the rear of the satellite converter box. Connect the other end of the cable to the DVI-in on the KVM (keyboard, video, mouse) switch.

    • 2

Connect the KVM switch to the appropriate power source. Make sure the power source is protected properly against spikes and surges.

    • 3

Connect the KVM's DVI cable to your monitor's DVI input, screwing the connector down firmly. Be sure not to over-tighten.

    • 4

Connect your PC's video output to the appropriate input on the KVM switch. If you are using additional PCs, connect your mouse and keyboard to the KVM, and connect the KVM's mouse and keyboard cables to your PC.

Tips & Warnings

  • DVI cables only carry video. Your sound will have to be carried via optical or composite cables.

  • An A/V switch is similar to a KVM switch but only toggles between television and video sources.
