How to Explain VoIP
VoIP is a phone technology that allows calls to be placed via the internet. As this is a relatively new technology, some people may not know or understand it very well. If you need to explain this to someone, or teach it as part of a class, you will need to understand how VoIP works, as well as how to explain it in a way that people can understand. This way, you will help people know about this technology.

1
Explain what VoIP is. VoIP stands for Voice over Internet Protocol, and essentially routes voice through packets through the Internet from one point to another. Indicate that many phone companies are looking to use the Internet instead of data lines to route calls to others.
-
2
Show the process of a VoIP connection. Start with how the call is made through a computer or regular phone, then connects through a normal line to a relay through several points on the Internet. At the end, the call returns to a physical wire near the caller and arrives at the phone of the recipient.

-
3
Discuss some of the popular VoIP applications and phone planes. Some of the programs you can talk about are Skype and Gizmo Project, while phone plans can be about places like Vonage.
-
4
Show how a call is made with VoIP. You may want to use Skype or a VoIP-enabled phone to do this. Emphasize the fact that in most cases there is little difference from a call made with a traditional phone line.

5
Answer any questions the person you're explaining this to might have.

Tips & Warnings
Consider using diagrams to help your audience understand VoIP. Make them install Skype or another program and have them use it, so they know how to communicate with each other.
