How to Get Your Product on the Energy Star Rating
In today's energy-conscious society, it is almost a requirement to have the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Energy Star logo on your product to make a sale. Your product may be just as efficient as a competitor's, but if theirs has the proof and yours doesn't, they get the sale. Not only are people trying to save money on their monthly utility bills, they are trying to do what is right for the environment. Having the Energy Star logo on your product lets your customers know that you share their goals and concerns.

1
Determine if the Energy Star guidelines have a category for your product. The Energy Star program has over 60 categories for a wide range of devices. You can find the link to the categories list on the Energy Star website in the Resources section at the bottom of this page.
-
2
Download the requirements for your category and make sure your device meets or exceed the minimums. The list of requirements can be downloaded by clicking on your category at the site referenced in the previous step.

3
Sign up as an Energy Star manufacturer. You can find a link to the relevant page of the Energy Star website in the resources section. On that page you will find the forms required to sign up for the program and instructions on where to send it.
-
4
Test your product's energy efficiency. The Energy Star program does not require third party testing to verify that your device meets its requirements. The EPA can at any point, however, perform their own tests on products which you claim have met the requirements. These tests are performed at random on products obtained on the open market. The requirements list for your category will tell you which test you must perform in order to qualify.
-
5
Send your test results to the EPA. This must be done once per year in order to remain a part of the program. You must qualify at least one product within one year of signing up for the Energy Star program.
-
6
Display the Energy Star logo on your product. The logo must be displayed prominently on the front of the product, as well as in product literature and on the product's page of your website.
-
7
Provide the EPA with yearly shipment reports. The EPA uses this data to determine the market penetration of Energy Star products. The data must be submitted by March of the following year, and will only be used by the agency for internal purposes.
