Learning to mow your lawn is an important task that helps to improve the aesthetic quality of your home's exterior as well as to prevent insects and rodents from finding a haven to nest within the lengthening blades of grass. Basic lawn maintenance involves regular mowing, a task you can accomplish with a few basic skills. Learning to mow your lawn is a simple process that does not require technical gardening or landscaping skills.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Lawn mower
  • Gasoline (or electrical outlet if using electric mower)
  • Trash bags
  • Gardening gloves (optional)
  1. Step 1

Ensure that you have gasoline for your lawn mower if your mower is gas-powered. If you are using an electric-powered mower, fully charge the mower before beginning to work on your lawn. If you are using a simple push-mower (a mower that is not electric or gas-powered), you are ready to begin mowing without gasoline or an electrical source.

  2. Step 2

Put on your gardening gloves, and collect any fallen branches or debris which could cause your mower damage.

  3. Step 3

Place the debris or fallen twigs and branches in one of your trash bags. Place any toys or articles from pets or children off to the side and out of the path of the lawn mower.

  4. Step 4

If you are using a gas or electric-powered mower, start your mower engine. Depending on which model you are using, you may need to turn a key to begin the mower engine or you may need to press a button. Many mowers have a pull handle which ignites a crank to start the engine. If your mower has a handle, it will be located on the top of the engine. To start, simply pull the handle in a firm, upward position. For more details on starting your mower engine, consult your operator's manual, which is specific to your model of mower.

  5. Step 5

Follow the path of a straight line while mowing your grass. Try to stay in a straight line as much as possible, and when turning corners, keep the mower wheels within two inches of your previous completed line.

  6. Step 6

Take a break and drink a glass of ice water if you feel tired or hot. Mowing a lawn can be hard work, and it is easy to become dehydrated in warm weather.

  7. Step 7

If your lawn mower has a collection bag attachment, remove any grass clippings from the collection bag on your lawn mower. To remove the collection bag, simply grab the base of the bag where it meets the mower, and pull in an upward position. Rinse off your lawn mower with a damp towel after each use.

Tips & Warnings
