How to Convert AVI to Mpeg for Free
AVI and MPEG are two different types of files that are used for the same general type of data. Anything with the AVI or MPEG extension will typically contain video data, although they may also contain audio information. While they both hold similar data there are many playback programs which can only properly utilize one or the other. You don't need to download two copies of the same video file if you have a program that can't open AVI files. Instead you can convert an AVI file directly to an MPEG file for free without actually changing the file's contents.

Tips & Warnings
Save an extra backup copy of each of your original AVI files before using the file conversion utility. If there is any problem with the conversion you will still have the original file to use.
The majority of free conversion tools available online are actually free trials. Once you have converted a certain number of hours of video or used the program for 14 days you will then need to either find another program or buy a full version.
