How to Stream Music on a Mac

With the proper equipment, an Apple computer such as a Mac can stream music to any speaker in a house or given area. Using Apple's Airport line of wireless network products, you can easily set up a music stream to work with your Macintosh computer, and set up a music system for your house.

Things You'll Need

  • Wireless network with airport extreme router
  • Airport Express for each stereo you want to connect
  • Mac with latest version of iTunes installed
  • Stereo with "Line in" jack

Instructions

      Plug your Airport Express units into the power outlets closest to the stereo systems you want to use.

      Connect each Airport Express to the stereos through the "line in" port of the stereos. Use a cable that will work with your stereo.

      Turn on the stereo you want music streamed to. Set the stereo to play from the "line in" channel.

      Open the Airport utility program on your Mac to set up the Airport Express unit. Follow the instructions on the program to connect the unit to your network. Repeat this step for each Airport Express unit you want to connect to the network.

      Open iTunes. At the bottom of the program, you should see a pop-up list of choices to broadcast the music to. Click on the speakers you want to use and hit play.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can also stream music to more than one Airport Express at a time using iTunes.

  • Do not connect the Airport express to the Phono jack of your stereo.
