How to Make a Newborn Sleep More Soundly

Parenting a newborn can be an exhausting task. By night time you might feel like you are going to fall over. You likely just want to relax and unwind but this can not happen until the baby has fallen fast asleep. Sometimes, getting the baby to sleep is not as easy as it might seem. Here are some tips on how to get your baby to fall asleep and sleep soundly.

Instructions

    • 1

Feed the baby a nice warm bottle of formula or breastfeed until the baby is satisfied. Make sure the baby has been burped and has a clean dry diaper. Make sure the baby is comfortably dressed, not too hot and not too cold. Make sure that their clothes are not too tight or pinching in any way and that the temperature in the room is comfortable.

Help the baby differentiate between day and night so he develops a regimen and knows when it is sleep time. You can do this by practicing the same routine and include dimmer lighting, less activity, and a warm bath before you settle the baby down for the night. Whichever way works best to put the baby to sleep is the way that they will want to fall back asleep after waking for a feeding. For example, if your baby is rocked to sleep then plan to rock them back to sleep as they will associate the rocking with sleep time.

Wrap the baby in a blanket and swaddle him. Newborns are supposed to sleep on their backs and when they are swaddled tightly they are known to sleep better and to startle less.

Forcing the baby to sleep is not a good idea; the more that they sense your frustration the less likely they are to fall asleep and stay asleep. Let the sleep come naturally. If you have made sleeping a good option for the baby then they are likely to take that cue and fall fast asleep.
