How to Change the ESN on a Palm Treo
Changing the electronic serial number on your cell phone allows you to use a different phone than the one you are currently using. The ESN is the electronic serial number and acts as an identification for your phone. When the ESN is activated, the system knows that the phone is the one that is supposed to be used. Changing the ESN yourself is a simple process that only takes a few steps. Anyone can change their ESN, most of the time without even entering the cell phone store. The ESN on a Palm Treo is located on the back of the phone, underneath the battery. It will most likely be labeled "ESN/MEID" or "HEX".

Tips & Warnings
You want to make sure that all your features from your previous Palm Treo carry over to your new one, such as insurance, text messaging, your data plan or navigation. You are able to check this online, in the store or through calling customer service.
Sometimes when trying to activate your new Palm Treo, you can run into an error involving the data plan. Palm Treos are mostly used as PDA devices that require a data plan in order to function. If that plan does not switch over to the new phone, there will be an error in the system and the phone will not activate. To solve this problem, call customer service from a land-line phone or go to your nearest cell phone store.
