How to Sanitize Countertops

People often use their kitchen countertops to prepare their meals. If there are any forms of bacteria on the countertops, however, they will transfer to the food. This can lead to a food-borne illness that will make you and the members of your family very sick. The best way to prevent this illness is to regularly clean and sanitize your countertops.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Hot water
  • Dish soap
  • Wash cloth
  • Bleach
  • Empty spray bottle
  • Paper towels
  1. Step 1

    Mix one drop of dish soap with eight ounces of hot water.

  2. Step 2

    Dip your washcloth in the dish water and use it to wipe down your countertops. This will get your countertops clean and ready to be sanitized.

  3. Step 3

    Mix one teaspoon of bleach with four cups of water. This ratio will provide an excellent sanitizer for your countertops.

  4. Step 4

    Pour the bleach water into an empty spray bottle. Spray your countertops with the solution.

  5. Step 5

    Wait two minutes. This is necessary if you have countertops that are porous. Dry your countertops with paper towels.

Tips & Warnings
  • Sanitizing wipes and sprays are available for purchase from your grocery store.
  • Bleach can sting open cuts. If you have an open cut, you will need to wear plastic gloves when sanitizing your countertops.
