How to Do Smoky Makeup

Things You'll Need
- Concealer in your skin tone
- Eye makeup sponge applicator
- Tri-color opaque eye shadow
- Soft-bristle eye makeup brush
- Lighted makeup mirror

Bring the drama

Apply concealer over your whole lid to create a consistent canvas for color and so eye makeup will last longer.

With a sponge-tip applicator, spread the darkest of the three eye shadow colors onto your the lash line from inside corner to outside edge. (For extra boldness, you could use dark eyeliner that matches the color of your eyelashes.)

Layer the second-darkest of the three eye shadow colors on your lid and blend where it meets with the darkest color, daubing the brush upward and outward.

Add the lightest of the three eye shadow colors from the eyelid up to the crease.

Blend all three colors together with a soft-bristle eye makeup brush, using small circular motions, upward and outward.

Tips & Warnings
If your skin is dry, try a cream shadow rather than powder.
Add even more contrast by using a shimmery, light-colored shadow on the inside corner of each eye.
Steer clear of blue tones when attempting to create the smoky-eye effect---it has a tendency to create the illusion of under-eye circles. The best tones for smoky eyes are gray, brown and dark green.
